[portfolio_slideshow id=1254 slideheight=400]Melanie McLain and Ander Mikalson invite you to change your grip and feel the periphery in their first collaborative installation and performance.One arm extends into the other, his back on the ground, hers in the air. “I’m trying to find your line.”  We’ve created a spectacle -- a focal point allows for a periphery. The person next to you sighs, her eyes touching a person across the room.  A blue line travels up the wall, ending at the height of a breath.  It divides us until the last one leaves the room.A Narrow Hollow VolumeOpens First Friday, March 7th from 6-10pmPerformances will occur once every hour throughout the opening reception.The exhibition will be on view through Saturday, March 29th.About the artists:Ander Mikalson has shown her installations and performances at Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden, Temple Contemporary, Philadelphia, PA, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Portland, ME, Flux Factory, Long Island City, NY and the Queens Museum, Queens, NY.  She was awarded the Art Matters Foundation grant, the College Art Association Professional-Development Fellowship in the Visual Arts, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Graduate Fellowship and a Mildred’s Lane Fellowship.  She earned an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.  Mikalson lives and works in New York City.Melanie McLain has exhibited her videos and installations at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach, Allegra LaViola in New York, Primetime in Brooklyn, and Galleria NoMINIO in Guayaquil Ecuador. Her work has been written about by Hyperallergic and Maisonneuve. She was awarded the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Fellowship and a residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute. McLain completed a dual degree in Sculpture and Psychology from the University of Florida in 2006 and earned an MFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2012. She has trained in different forms of acrobatic movement for 25 years, including gymnastics, breakdancing, yoga, and partner acrobatics. McLain lives, works, and trains in New York.
