The artist Lisa Dillin invites you to step inside PRACTICE to feel the sunshine on your face.
How has our species changed with our changing environment? What about us is unaltered? Do we ever look back? Once humans hunted and gathered foods instead of shopping for these items at the grocery store. Before we gained the ability to construct climate-controlled structures, we lived continuously in contact with the land. In contrast, survival today is dependent on our place in the economy, and it is this system that allows us to provide shelter and sustenance for our families. Survival within this system can be difficult if not impossible for some. For this group of individuals, the disconnect from the natural world, and the behavioral expectations, social climate, and survival challenges of the modern paradigm are problematic.
Lisa Dillin provides a solution by producing surrogate objects for the ephemera of nature and staging experiences that reenact our ancestral experiences. All objects/experiences Dillin creates are ultimately inadequate in their pursuit to pacify the desire to touch base with our roots. These are stopgap measures - temporary solutions for our ongoing needs.
Natural Lighting Emulator II approximates the mottled lighting effect of daylight as filtered through a canopy of trees. This lighting effect has become a rarity in the concrete jungle. NLEII acts as a surrogate for this formerly common experience allowing the user to bask in the light as they utilize this doorway to the past.
