DANCE DOCUMENT 2020
On View March 6th - 29th Opening March 6th, 6-10pm with a performance at 7pm
Stay-home workshop series: Dance with domestic objects
In Dance Document 2020 movement-based interdisciplinary artist Terry Hempfling is investigating the relationship of ephemeral dance performance to documentation. She is curious about the desire to hold on to an artwork which is essentially temporary, such as a time-based performance. This human motivation has affected documentary technologies (photography, video), while the limitations of these technologies have simultaneously affected our ability to capture a moment in time. As advancements are made in recording materials, we are able to create more precise and enduring documentation, but do our records communicate the same thing as the original, ephemeral work? What is the difference? Is there a conversation between the document and the performance? Is the document a historical reference or is it a work in and of itself? How does documentation interact with commodification and capitalism? What happens when documents deteriorate? How do all of these questions influence our perception as artists and viewers? Are there better ways to document the ephemeral?
