Come on down to PRACTICE GALLERY for MCDAZZLER’S CHEST: a Saturday night variety show series! As a part of her show, mcdazzler is dead, Alicia McDaid will be performing and hosting a weekly variety show featuring local performance/ video artists and musicians every Saturday night in March at 7:00. 

About the artist
Alicia McDaid is a performance/video artist, actor and painter currently based in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Berlin. Her work depicts a shattering of the self into various personas that create a vulnerable, absurd and grotesque collage of identity refusal. Her show, mcdazzler is dead, is currently on view at Practice Gallery until March 30.

 

MARCH 9 MCDAZZLER’S CHEST

Lu Chekowsky is an Emmy-winning writer and creative director who built a successful career in media through gut, intuition, and addiction to approval. Lu’s essays and poems have appeared in journals including: The Rumpus, Pigeon Pages, The Maine Review and her work has been supported by Mass MoCA, Tin House, SPACE on Ryder Farm. She is a 2023 New York State Council on the Arts/New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow in Nonfiction Literature @luchekowsky

Eva Wu is a visual artist based in Philadelphia for the past decade. Harnessing the power of vibrant color, love of technology, and magic of craft, their immersive multimedia art spans moving image, public art, interactive installations, and social practice. They have been awarded fellowships from The Pew Center for Arts &Heritage, Leslie Lohman Museum of Art, Leeway Foundation, Elsewhere Museum, and Center For Emerging Visual Artists. Currently they are studying animation at University of Pennsylvania and are a Visiting Instructor at Haverford College. @slutsnax

Harmon Butcher was the 1967 poet-in-residence at the Dunkirk Archery Academy and was appointed poet laureate of the Canadian Sagittarian Society from 1971-1972. Since 1989, Butcher has been Assistant Mentor at the New Sweden Youth Poetry Institute (sponsored by the Scandinavian Archers Guild) and has published several chapbooks via Royal Association of Bow Sports Press. @yianni_kourmades

Jerry Kaba is a multimedia artist, educator, and founder of Practice Gallery, AWFUL Wrestling, and Modular On the Spot Philly. Kaba will be performing an experimental sound set with a modular synthesizer and stringed instruments.

MARCH 16 MCDAZZLER’S CHEST

Adrienne Truscott is a choreographer, circus acrobat, dancer, writer, storyteller and comedian. She has been making genre-straddling performances in New York City and abroad for over 20 years. She was one of 20 artists selected nationally for the inaugural 2014 Doris Duke Impact Artist Award and is a 2017 Foundation for Contemporary Arts grantee for Theater/Performance Art.   Her evening-length solo comedic work and group choreographic works have been presented variously at Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs, Darwin Festival, PS122, Joe’s Pub, The Kitchen, Dublin Fringe, Danspace, Boom Arts, New York Live Arts, The Malthouse Theater (Melbourne), and Dance Theater Workshop, among others. Her form-busting and ground-breaking show Adrienne Truscott's Asking For It: A One-Lady Rape About Comedy Starring Her Pussy and Little Else! won the 2013 Edinburgh Foster's Panel-Prize, was a finalist for the Total Theater Award for Playing With Form and is considered a critical impetus to the evolving conversation about rape culture. @missus_truscott

Rose Luardo is a full-grown crone who centers her work on sculpture, video, and performance, where the performance is generally funny and psychically threatening. Her flavor is fizz and menopause. She creates performance installations using a combo platter of whatever she found in your mother’s closet, fiber art, elaborate makeup, papier mache, beauty goop, elbow macaroni, and a dry-rotted PVC dildo. Imagine an elder pixie frolicking in a sea thrift store trash garnished with a dollop of Marietta Fortune. @roseluardo

Dave Hannon, he/him, is a curator, artist, and educator based in Philadelphia. He is currently in a PhD Program at Drexel University in Digital Media with a focus in queer studies, and an assistant curator at PRACTICE Gallery. His work revolves around creating large scale, interactive installations. He received a bachelor's in art from Syracuse University and a Master’s in Fine Art from UMASS Amherst.  His work has been exhibited in Western Massachusetts; Kansas City; Portland, Oregon; New York City; Philadelphia; and Boston; recently having a solo show at PRACTICE Gallery in 2021. @bagelqueen4u

Sarah Knittel is a theater artist, festival co-founder, event producer, and clown. She helped found Free Fringe Philly festival, which creates accessibility to Fringe work in Philadelphia by eliminating costs and ticket prices while supporting the artists. Free Fringe Philly won a coveted arts spot on the Best Of 2021 list from Philly Magazine. Sarah on a stage has been described as “totally engaging” and “the work of a pro, fearlessly engaging the audience from start to finish, until we are all practically co-stars, or at least co-conspirators.” (Broad St Review) Hailed “Philly Actors Who Are Better Than You (at acting)…” (Phindie) The creator of Ben Franklin Sex Party and NIGHTMARE FUEL, a brutal clown show, which won the “Spirit of the Fringe” award in 2019 at Cincinnati Fringe. It was also one of the recipients of 1812’s Jilline Ringle Fund. It garnered four stars in Edinburgh Fringe and was lauded as “a quintessential niche fringe experience” by the Wee Review. Sarah produces a multitude of events throughout Philadelphia including a monthly variety experience called HELLRIDE. Most recently, Sarah wrote and starred in a series of horror comedy shorts called “HELLTOWN” now out on youtube. IG: @sarahhmonster

Cassidy Beentjes studied classical guitar and composition, among other things, at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, England. Currently working on: an arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue for 100 banjos. @cassidybeentjes

Katie Hartman is an actor and comedian living in New York City. She was selected to perform at Just For Laughs in Montreal as one of the New Faces of Comedy: Characters of 2018. She was a staff writer and performer on the WGA nominated Paid Off with Michael Torpey on truTV. You can see her in the Adam Sandler/Robert Smigel Netflix movie The Week Of. Katie wrote and performed for Seriously.tv, Hearst Media's social justice comedy network.  Her sketch duo, Skinny Bitch Jesus Meeting, has been a critic’s picks in Time Out New York, Washington Post, and Charleston City Paper.  Festivals include: New York Sketchfest, Charleston Comedy Festival, East to Edinburgh at 59E59, Edinburgh Fringe, Capital Fringe, FringeNYC, FRIGID New York, Out of Bounds and in 2015 they headlined Austin Sketchfest. Their web series "Made To Order" was listed as one of "6 Brilliant Web Series" by Marie Claire. @khartsucks

Richie Brown (from New Jersey) works in various mediums such as painting, projections, soft sculpture, animation, video, interactive installations etc. and currently practices a creative philosophy some have described as “goofin’ around until something seemingly profound happens.” @richiebrowntown

Audra Wist has been featured at High Art (Paris), The Broad Museum (Los Angeles), DELI Gallery (New York), 56 Henry (New York), Ace Hotel (Los Angeles), Museum of Sex (New York), Singers (New York), Olfactory Art Keller (New York), Vivid SiriusXM, and written for Flaunt magazine, Autre magazine, and Discipline Press along with self-publishing two books of poetry. Wist was a professional dominatrix for 10 years and Autre magazine's sex editor-at-large. She studied at Carnegie Mellon University (BFA) and UCLA (MFA) and has completed residencies at Yale Norfolk, Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Iris Project, and Flaherty Film Seminar.
