(an)other: Wayne Hodge
February 2015(an)otherAn installation by Wayne HodgeOn view February 6th – 27th, 2015Opening Reception Friday, February 6 from 6-10This February Wayne Hodge and PRACTICE invite you to examine the conflict between historical fantasy and representations of a racialized other. Taking a cue from the Surrealist works of Max Ernst, Wayne Hodge: an(other) is latest in an ongoing series of collages that use 19th century pop culture depictions of the Black subject: blackface, minstrelsy, and slavery, in order to deconstruct and challenge notions of a “fixed” identity. Throughout the series mouths are covered by a larger mouths; skins are replaced by other skins as if one subject is emerging or being devoured by another. Wayne Hodge’s latest work offers an alternative American narrative that is fantastic; one that defies easy categorization, and asks viewers to question identity and examine the tropes of race.About the Artist:Wayne Hodge is an artist whose work combines elements of collage, performance and photography.
