Monster(ositie)s?: Various

2013 MAYMonster(ositie)s?May 3 - June 1, 2013[portfolio_slideshow id=760 height=500]Practice invites you to check your inhibitions at the door and enter a space overrun by monsters.

Practice presents Monster(ositie)s?, a collection of works curated by Peter Morgan that address topics which are shocking and/or unacceptable in nature. The exhibited works of artists Martin Baker, Janet MacPherson, Sean Starwars, Emily Stover and Kim Tucker tackle themes ranging from microbes to monster trucks in an exhibition that makes you question your definition of monstrous and frees your voyeuristic mind to delight in all things freakish, gruesome, base and obscene.

Come and see for yourself… if you dare! The gallery will be closed on Saturday, May 25th in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday.

About the Artists:

Martin Baker is a criminal defense lawyer residing in Modesto, California.  When he is not in court or preparing for a trial he spends his time painting portraits of serial killers. Baker finds the practice therapeutic but admits that the subject matter is “not good for dating”.  A native of England, Martin was a fine arts major in college and worked his way through law school as a sign painter.

Janet MacPherson is a Canadian based sculptor, and currently is an artist in residence at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Her work investigates peculiar things that live on the edge of normal.  She exhibits extensively in both Canada, the United States, and abroad.  Janet has a BFA from Sheridan College in Ontario and a MFA from the Ohio State University.

Emily Stover is an architect and public artist working in alternative landscapes, new media, and temporary architecture as interactive community space. She is currently developing projects that use the public preparation and sharing of food as a social design medium.  She is a current City Art Collaboratory Fellow with Public Art Saint Paul, and an Art(ist) on the Verge Fellow through Northern Lights MN. She plays with dough for fun.

Sean Starwars is a printmaker living in Laurel, Mississippi with his wife and four kids.  He is a proud member of the infamous “Outlaw Printmakers” and once lost a teaching job because of one of his prints.  He has a BA from Old Dominion Univiversity and a MFA from Lousiana State University.  Sean is a prolific woodcut artist and drinks lots of Mountain Dew.

Kim Tucker is a Los Angeles based artist whose work “is a sculptural expedition into the wild and woolly world of the subconscious.”  She has a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts, and a MFA from the Ohio State University. Kim exhibits extensively in the greater Los Angels area and is represented by L2Kontemporary.  In addition to exhibiting Kim has participated in many residencies including the Futur Artist’s Residency in Switzerland, and the Belden Brick Factory in Sugar Creek Ohio.
