Another Timepiece

Practice gallery is pleased to present Another Timepiece, by Sarah Belle Reid and Ryan Gaston. Another Timepiece is an arrangement for eight resonant metal plates networked together and activated by audio feedback. By treating these plates both as microphones and speakers, their own resonant tendencies gradually become apparent. By extending this process across multiple objects, characteristics common to multiple plates create reinforcements—a commingling of past, future, and present that favors representation of plate commonalities. This creates either ringing harmonies, chaotic noise, or silence…all depending on subtle details in the way time unfolds.

The gallery opening will feature a liveperformance by the artists, in which electronically augmented trumpet andlaptop computer are used to further explore the sound world created by themetal plates.

SarahBelle Reid is a Canadian performer-composer, specializing in trumpet andelectronics, modular synthesis, and alternate forms of graphical notation forcomposition and improvisation. She is a co-developer of the Minimally InvasiveGesture Sensing Interface (MIGSI) for trumpet, as well asa founding member of the experimental improvisation duo Burnt Dot.

Ryan Gaston (b. 1990) is a performerand composer working primarily in the field of electronic music andelectronic/acoustic collaboration. Gaston performs frequently with modularsynthesizers, computers, and daxophone, and is a founding member of Burnt Dotand co-developer of the Minimally Invasive Gesture Sensing Interface (MIGSI)for trumpet.
